Trial by Literature

Year 13 students held a “trial by literature” of the character Meursault, from The Stranger by Albert Camus. Prosecution and Defence teams argued their cases and called witnesses; playing characters from the novel. Judge Xiao presided over proceedings in the insaka. Here, we also see Munita called to the witness stand as Salamano, Meursault’s neighbour.

Secondary university and careers guidance in Semester 1

Fabulous IGCSE Results

ISL is thrilled to be celebrating our most successful set of IGCSE results on record. I would like to extend my congratulations to all candidates who received their results yesterday!

IGCSE Settle In - Key Announcements and Reminders

As we commence the new academic year, we want to extend a warm welcome to our new IGCSE students in Year 10 and our continuing students in Year 11. We had a strong start to our HBL programme and I want to thank all students, parents and staff for their commitment and engagement over the last two days.

Knowing which “counselor” to contact

The word counselor can mean many different things, depending on where you are in the world. Indeed, even the spelling of the word (counselor vs counsellor...and there's even councilor) differs between countries.

Welcome to the new school year, and a special welcome to our new families. Although our start is once again affected by the coronavirus, we can look forward to a wonderful year ahead. If you didn’t already, you can read about our new teachers here - we welcome them to our team. We can also celebrate a number of successes, which you may read about here. All in all, school is in good shape and ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Good Morning, ISL! from our new Athletic Director

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the new Athletic Director and Head of PE department. My family has been in Zambia for almost 2 weeks now and we are very excited to start the new school year on Monday! 

I really hope that very soon we will be permitted to start our co-curricular programme to provide our students the opportunity to develop their different athletic, artistic, musical and other talents. Meanwhile, I would like to invite all the students, parents, and teachers to join our “Good Morning, ISL!” programme.

Celebrating our school

As we move into the new year, we have much to celebrate at our school. We have a strong faculty with a wonderful set of new colleagues joining us, our campus has never looked better and our exam results have never been higher. Here are some of the things we are celebrating at the moment:

Starting a parent conversation about back-to-school with Secondary students

 Regardless of whether we feel the holiday has been too short or too long, my guess is that there has not been a lot of time that parents have spent berating/negotiating/forcing their children to “hit the books”....or am I divulging too much of what my approach was?

In any case, what follows is an overview of some ideas about how to start some conversations/persuasion/coercion over the dinner table this week or perhaps over the next few weeks, ahead when the students are coming back to school.

COVID and Opening Campus - Update

Our COVID Task Force (CTF) met last week, led by our board chair, Thomson Phiri, to review the situation. The CTF considered a number of factors concerning the disease and other circumstances, along with feedback from association members left on last week's COVID blog post. The CTF made the following recommendations to our board:

A fond farewell

Dear ISL Community,

I would like to say goodbye to the entire ISL Community as I retire from teaching, the career I have dedicated my entire life to. I have been with ISL since 1st January 2000. The period I have spent at this institution has simply been wonderful and rewarding. Yes, we have had challenges and turbulences along the way, but together, we have always overcome them.

My special thanks go to the Board of Governors, ISL Management, the entire faculty, and the support staff that have made ISL what it is. It is a learning institution of its own kind. It offers a warm, friendly, and caring learning environment not only to the students but to the educators as well. To our Board members, please accept my sincere gratitude for the long, countless, voluntary hours you put into the running of this institution.

To the past and the present parents and guardians that have supported and encouraged me over the years in various ways, I say thank you very much. I tried to do the best I could in contributing to the well-being and the success of our children, who I believe, will in turn contribute to the betterment of our community, society, and the world.

Lastly, I wish each one of you the best of everything. You have been a wonderful family. Farewell.

Here is an overview of what is happening in Secondary during our last week of school.

Introducing Beverley Bloem - Whole School Counsellor and PSHE Teacher

Beverley Bloem joins ISL as the whole school counsellor and PSHE teacher with over 20 years of international school experience. Bev attained her degree in Secondary Education from Edgewood Teacher Training College UKZN, South Africa and a Masters in Counseling from Wake Forest University in the USA.

Bev started off her career as a teacher in the village of Maun in Botswana and has gone on to work as a teacher and counsellor in another twelve countries. As a teacher she taught most of the subjects at the Primary and Middle School levels and Geography, Art and Technical Drawing (Engineering Graphics) in High schools. As a counsellor she assisted students as they faced emotional, social, and academic challenges and provided career guidance to students pursuing internships and university options around the world.

Beverley enjoys exploring new places and meeting people from diverse backgrounds. To relax she likes to get outside, watch sports and movies, and pizza with friends.
