Thinking and Learning Differences: Understanding Reading Difficulties Parent Workshop

On Tuesday 15 March 2022 the Student Support Services held a parent workshop that focused on understanding reading difficulties. The workshop is part of a series of workshops aimed at unpacking the different learning difficulties that we may come across at the International School of Lusaka.

This particular workshop served to shed light on basic reading skills as a way of understanding how reading difficulties may exhibit themselves. The workshop also gave parents a few key ‘red flags’ that could be signs that a child is experiencing difficulties in reading. Intervention strategies and finally when to seek extra support to help a child overcome reading difficulties were also shared.

A key take away was that all children can and will learn to read. However, some may take a little longer. Therefore early intervention is essential to support the development of reading.
