The ISL Student Support Services (SSS) is pleased to announce a series of online workshops for parents from our Counseling and Learning Support team. The workshops will run from February 2022 to May 2022 and cover a range of themes in the hope of empowering parents with knowledge and strategies to help support their children. All the workshops are virtual and begin at 18:00 hours. Save the dates and join us for the following:
- Tuesday 15th February, 18h00 : Supporting Your Child with Test/Exam Anxiety
Many of us as adults can still vividly recall the stress and anxiety we felt taking tests and exams. We will look at the nature of stress (even the positive aspects) and come up with strategies to help your children minimize the level of anxiety they may experience leading up to and during tests and exams.
- Tuesday 22nd February, 18h00: Thinking and Learning Differences (Rerun- Part 1)
Due to several requests, the Student Support Services will be conducting a rerun of the virtual parent workshop which was held in December 2021. The workshop is part of a series of workshops and is titled "Learning and Thinking Differences: An Introduction to Learning Difficulties''.
The workshop is aimed at affirming, confirming and adding new insights to learning difficulties. This is the first of many workshops that we will bring to you each academic year.
- Tuesday 15th March, 18h00: Understanding Reading and Spelling Difficulties (Part 2)
It is often exciting when your child begins to learn to read and show evidence of developing their writing skills. During the journey to literacy, there may be a few red flags that may cause you to look a little closer at the development of reading and writing skills. During the workshop, we will look at what those red flags may look like, when to get concerned and how to intervene.
- Tuesday 12th April, 18h00: Navigating Conflict with Your Child/ Children
Conflict is inevitable between parents and children. We will explore some of the conflict triggers and look at strategies for what to do in the midst of a conflict and how to move towards restoration/resolution.
- Tuesday 3rd May, 18h00: Middle Infant Screening Test (MIST)- Introduction Workshop for Reception Parents
The Middle Infant Screening Test (MIST) is a screener carried out for 4-6 year olds to help gauge their literacy development. It looks at early reading skills such as listening comprehension, phonemic awareness, early word writing and sentence writing. This important screener, coupled with feedback from the classroom teacher, can generate an overview of early literacy development and if necessary, indicate if further support in literacy might be required for children. Learn more about the MIST at the workshop.
Workshops are for both primary and secondary school parents unless where otherwise stated. We hope that you can save the dates and join us!
Links to the workshops will be provided closer to the dates.
