IGCSE Exam Strategy and the Road Ahead

With IGCSE Mock Exams now complete, I would like to remark on how thoroughly impressed I have been by all Year 11 students. This is an incredibly stressful two weeks for students but every single one rose to the challenge and then some! They were consistently focused, organised and confident - a true testament to their hard work and the dedication of their teachers over the last two years.

However, with mocks now over the real hard work begins! Between now and the start of IGCSE exams there is less than a month - and this month will be the crucial period which will decide whether a student will secure a D or a C, an A or A*. Therefore, it is very important that students use their mocks as a valuable reflection point in order to prepare well.

1. Make sure you read the teacher comments in your final report. They will contain extremely valuable feedback and advice on what you need to do now to improve your grade.

2. Look at the subjects you are not making the progress you want. For each subject identify 3 to 5 things. you CAN'T do but if you did would make a difference to your marks.

3. Diagnosis. Examine your mock papers carefully and identify the questions you got wrong or areas you struggled with.

4. Therapy. Think about where you are going to learn about this. What revision strategies would be helpful?

5. Testing. Note down questions someone could ask you to check your understanding.

6. Do another past paper and repeat.

To help students with this process I have created exam strategy booklets with templates you can fill in. A virtual copy is available here. All students will get a paper copy from their tutors - use it in lessons, use it for revision, use it for after school support.
