Tomorrow, Secondary students will be voting for representatives for our three Houses: Kafue, Luangwa and Zambezi, and next week students will be voting for their Class Representatives (Class Reps).
HOUSES
Each House has three divisions; Junior (Years 7,8,9), Intermediate (Years 10, 11) and Senior (Years 12, 13). Each division will have a boy and a girl House Captain. So each House will have 6 captains.
Some of the duties and responsibilities of House Captains are as follows:
Attend all House meetings as required
Attend all House competitions in House uniform
Promote their House within the school community
Work with teachers to arrange for Inter-House events
Act as a referee/umpire/linesman/table official if requested
Lead the ”House Cheer” at the beginning and end of Inter-House tournaments
Be responsible for the organization and selection of players for the House teams
CLASS REPS
Secondary Class Reps are an important and integral part of the Secondary Student Council.
Some of the expectations of Class Reps are to:
Volunteer at/attend other school events
Attend meetings as called by the Executive Committee
Act as guides/buddies for new/prospective students arriving to ISL
Act as the information conduit between Executive Committee and the Tutor Group
Model a positive attitude and promote ISL and Student Council events at all times
Undertaking either of these positions, House Captain or a Class Rep, is an excellent way to develop leadership skills. Both roles require a time commitment and dedication. It is for this reason that we require parental approval and support for a student’s nomination.
I understand that sometimes children can be shy to put themselves forward, so please encourage your child to be considered applying for either one of these roles. If they are not sure about it, they can always come and talk to the Athletic Director, Mr Baskevics, the Counselor, Ms Bloem, or myself.
